Incorporating Net Zero elements within ESOS

BEIS is currently exploring refocusing the ESOS scheme from short term cost savings to cover longer term strategic considerations around energy use through introducing a net zero element. This would be a welcome improvement as companies will gain more value from the ESOS reports. Most qualifying companies will have carried out two ESOS energy audits providing them with a measure of their base level energy consumption and many will have implemented the energy saving measures in the reports.  We are now in phase three of ESOS and companies would benefit from using their next audit to look forward and plan how they are going to achieve net zero.

Aligning ESOS and SECR

BEIS are also considering aligning ESOS and SECR which would avoid duplication and reduce the cost of compliance. Colin Lillicrap Associates has adopted a  common approach to gathering and processing data for both ESOS and SECR and then encouraging companies to use this information as the starting point for developing a strategy and plan to achieve net zero carbon. We can advise on further carbon reduction measures and the most appropriate technologies that may be required to achieve these savings. The race to net zero is stimulating rapid development of new technologies and solutions and it is important to keep abreast of these to avoid investing in technologies that may be obsolete in a few years’ time. We can also expect more from government in the way of green taxes but also incentives in the form of grants and loans. Companies applying for government contracts are already required to have a net zero plan in place.

Achieving net zero carbon emissions

All businesses, large and small, will need to plan how they are going to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Investors want to see the company has a sustainable business plan and customers expect companies to protect the environment. Having a plan to achieve net zero and be seen to be acting on it will reassure investors and customers. If your company is ready to start developing its net zero plan we would like to hear from you. We can offer a free initial assessment of what is required to develop your plan using any information already available to minimise the cost.
